Why heating failures cluster on the coldest nights
Heating equipment fails under load. The first hard cold snap of the season is a stress test: ignitors that weakened over the summer crack, flame sensors coated in oxide finally cannot prove flame, inducer motors with tired bearings stall, and heat pumps that limped through mild weather cannot keep up once temperatures drop into the twenties. Furnace, heat pump, boiler, oil: we speak all four
The upper Shore is mixed-fuel country. Propane and natural gas furnaces, electric air handlers with heat pumps, oil-fired furnaces with Beckett burners, and hot water boilers with radiators all live within a few miles of each other here, sometimes on the same road. Each fails differently. Gas furnaces speak in blink codes and lockouts. Oil burners need nozzles, filters, and electrodes serviced as a system. The safety layer: what we always check
Combustion heating deserves respect. On gas and oil calls we verify heat exchangers, venting, and combustion numbers, because a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue is a carbon monoxide risk, not just a comfort problem. If you ever smell gas, do not troubleshoot: leave the house and call your gas supplier from outside, then call us. And every home with combustion equipment or an attached garage should have working CO detectors on every level. We check for them on every heating call and will tell you plainly if your setup has a safety problem, even when it is unrelated to the repair we came for.

- Thermostat set to heat, setpoint above room temperature, fresh batteries if it takes them
- Filter checked: a clogged filter can overheat a furnace into repeated safety lockouts

- Propane or oil tank level verified: empty tanks cause a surprising number of winter calls
- For heat pumps in ice storms: some frost on the outdoor coil is normal, a solid block of ice is not
