How to Buy a New Air Conditioner Without Getting Played
Sizing is everything, and bigger is not better
The single most common installation mistake on the Shore is oversizing. An oversized air conditioner cools the air fast and then shuts off before it has run long enough to remove moisture. In our humidity that produces a house that reads 72 degrees and feels like a basement: clammy, cold, and damp. Oversized systems also short-cycle, which wears components early and burns extra electricity.
Correct sizing comes from the house, not from the old unit's label and not from square footage alone. Window area and orientation, insulation levels, air leakage, duct condition, and ceiling heights all feed the load. We size from the actual property, and in this climate we would rather be exactly right than comfortably oversized.
What drives the price of an installation
Two quotes for the same house can differ by thousands, and the difference is rarely the box.
