Spring HVAC Guide for the Upper Eastern Shore
Spring on the Shore is the calm before the humidity. The heating season is winding down, the cooling season has not yet leaned on anything, and every system problem discovered now is a scheduled appointment instead of a heat-wave emergency. It is also peak pollen, which is when filtration quality gets noticed.
This is the season we tell every customer, residential and commercial, to spend one afternoon and one service visit on. Here is exactly where to spend them.
For Homeowners
Change the filter and start the cooling-season rhythm
Fresh filter now, spares on the shelf, and a recurring reminder. High-pollen springs here clog filters faster than the box promises, and allergy households should consider a media filter upgrade before the season, not during it.
Rinse and clear the outdoor unit
Pull off the winter's leaves, cut back shrubs to two feet of clearance, and gently rinse the coil with a garden hose, water only. Cottonwood season is coming, and a clean coil going in makes the whole summer easier.
Test cooling on a mild day
Run the AC before you need it: cool air within a few minutes, outdoor unit spinning without grinding or clanking, no new noises. A system that fails an April test gets fixed in April.
Find your condensate drain
Summer here means your system removes gallons of water daily. Know where the drain line exits and what normal dripping looks like, so water around the indoor unit gets recognized as the alarm it is.
Book the professional spring service
Capacitors tested under load, charge verified with gauges, contactor inspected, drain treated against our algae, blower checked. The failures of July are visible in April to anyone who measures.
Watch humidity, not just temperature
If last summer was cool but clammy, say so at the spring visit. Oversizing, low charge, and drainage issues each leave a specific humidity fingerprint, and spring is when they get fixed calmly.

Schedule cooling service before Memorial Day
Rooftop units and split systems serviced in April fail dramatically less in July. Coils cleaned, charge verified, belts and bearings checked, economizers proven, drains cleared. The Saturday failure is a spring maintenance decision.
Reset the filter program
Winter dust and spring pollen load commercial filters hard. Restaurants and retail need shorter intervals than offices; if your program is one-size-fits-all, it is wrong for at least one space.
